Nicole’s Story
Nicole joined For My Baby and Me in Fall 2023, seeking the support necessary to overcome her addiction and to ultimately reunite with her child. At that time, she faced multiple obstacles but despite the challenges, she was committed to her recovery. Nicole fell into addiction after losing a close friend to a heroin overdose. When Nicole became pregnant, she realized that she had to choose what she could and could not live without. She knew she wanted to be with her daughter, which meant she had to live without drugs, but she was willing to put in hard work to obtain reunification. That’s when she reached out to Thomasine Gaines, our certified peer recovery specialist at The Rescue Mission of Trenton, who played a major role in helping Nicole find herself again.
Nicole fully embraced the comprehensive care offered by the FMBAM team and eventually regained trust in others, learned to believe in herself again, and realized how having a purpose can change everything. Through consistent participation and support from the FMBAM team, Nicole was able to maintain her sobriety, and reach reunification with her daughter.
In July 2024, Nicole started working at Rescue Mission as a member of the Outreach project, travelling to places where others might be struggling with addiction and offering her time, building a rapport, and eventually offering a path to recovery, access to healthcare, and housing. Most recently, Nicole joined the FMBAM team as a Program Ambassador. She serves as an inspiring support to other people navigating similar challenges in our community.

“There are people who actually care about you in this program. This is their mission. Why not get help if it’s free?”
